One of the most powerful elements to the Yoga practice is its ability to meet us where we are in the moment - in bodies and minds. B.K.S. Iyengar (fondly referred to as the 'Father of Yoga') was quoted in saying, "Yoga allows you to find a new kind of freedom that you may not have known even existed.” For some of us, this means freedom from tension and pain in the body, or freedom from obstacles in the mind like worry, fear or doubt. We all come to the Yoga practice with different experiences and expectations.

At Shanti Yoga Center, we are committed to supporting your yoga journey towards freedom and peace. We help you find classes and experiences that are aligned with your interests and goals. We design educational opportunities to support your curiosity and discipline in Yoga. We seek to provide a variety of yoga classes and a place where you can find yoga at anytime of the day. Here are some commonly asked questions that might help you get started.

What are the benefits to Yoga?

With a consistent Yoga practice, you can expect to develop a strong and flexible body and mind! Yoga has been around for centuries and the health benefits are plentiful!

Do you have classes suitable for Beginners at Shanti Yoga Center?

For beginners we encourage you to meet with Jessie, Shanti Yoga Center owner and teacher. She can help assess your interest and ability while making recommendations on where to start. In general, we encourage new students being with a Level 1 or Open level class. These are marked clearly in the class descriptions. If it is your first class ever be sure to let the teacher know and they will provide modifications and assistance if needed.

We also have a Beginner Foundations Series, a class that meets once a week for 6 weeks each quarter. Please ask for more information when you call, email or stop in.

What should I bring to my first class?

  • You should wear comfortable loose-fitting clothing.

  • Bring water and your mat if you have one.

  • For hot classes a sweat towel and a mat towel will help support your practice by absorbing moisture and preventing slipping on your mat.

  • Sweat towels are free for members and $1.00 to rent.

  • For all students, yoga mats and mat towels are $2.00 to rent.

  • Yoga blocks, mats and towels are sold in our retail area.
