What yoga actually Does for you.
The Science behind the practice
Nervous System Reset
Yoga activates the parasympathetic nervous system — your “rest and digest” state. Regular practice reduces cortisol, improves sleep quality, and builds your capacity to handle stress without being overwhelmed.
Hormonal Balance
Especially for women in midlife, yoga directly supports hormonal regulation. It helps manage hot flashes, mood swings, and the cortisol spikes that disrupt sleep — through movement that works with your body, not against it.
Yoga has been practiced for centuries — but modern science now confirms what practitioners have always known. A consistent practice creates measurable changes in how you feel, move, and think. Here’s what you can expect.
Strength & Mobility
Yoga builds functional strength — the kind you use picking up grandchildren, carrying groceries, or hiking a trail. It also lubricates joints and lengthens connective tissue, so you move more freely and with less pain.
Pain Management
Chronic back pain, hip tension, and joint stiffness respond remarkably well to consistent yoga practice. Our teachers hold certifications in yoga therapy and injury-specific approaches, so you'll always practice safely.
Mental Clarity & Presence
The combination of breath and movement trains your attention. Over time, you'll find it easier to stay focused, less reactive to stress, and more present in your daily life — not just on the mat.
Community & Connection
Shanti is more than a workout. It's a place where people linger after class for tea and conversation. Members stay because of how they feel when they're here — seen, supported, and part of something real.
Yin + Stillness — Beginner Friendly
A deeply grounding, floor-based practice with long-held poses designed to hydrate connective tissue and calm the nervous system. Includes breathwork, meditation, and extended stillness. Ideal for stress relief, recovery, and nervous system reset.
Flow — All Levels
A balanced, non-heated vinyasa class blending strength, mobility, and breath at a moderate pace. Options to explore challenge or ease throughout. Great once you've been to a few classes and want a well-rounded practice.
Flow + Yin — All Levels
Begins with gentle to moderate flowing movement, then transitions into longer-held floor-based yin poses. Bridges effort and ease — perfect for unwinding body and mind in a single session.
Heated Power Flow — Prior Experience Helpful
A strong, energizing, heat-building practice with continuous movement and athletic sequencing. Designed for students with some prior yoga experience who enjoy challenge, sweat, and dynamic transitions.
Not sure which class is right for you? That's exactly what Jessie's 30-minute intro session is for. She'll learn about your goals, any physical considerations, and point you toward the class that's the best fit — before you ever step into the room.

What to bring
Comfortable, flexible clothing and water. Yoga mats and hand towels are available if you don't have your own. For hot yoga classes, bring a full-size towel. We also carry mats and accessories in our retail area.
After class
Stay for a few minutes — there's tea, conversation, and a community worth getting to know. The space is designed for lingering. Some of our members' best connections have happened in the ten minutes after savasana.
A few simple Courtesies
These aren't rules — they're the small things that help everyone's practice feel safe and sacred. Most of them are just common sense once you've been to a few classes.
Silence your phone
Turn it off or to silent as soon as you arrive — not right before class starts. Smartwatches too. The yoga room is a screen-free zone.
Respect mat space
Your mat is your personal sanctuary. Avoid stepping on others' mats as you move through the room. In a full class, place your mat close enough to make space for everyone.
Bathroom breaks
Step out during resting poses like child's pose or downward dog. No need to ask permission — just time it well and return quietly.
You probably have Questions
Never skip savasana
The final resting pose is when your nervous system integrates everything you've done. If you must leave, tell the teacher beforehand.
Common Questions
Here are the things people most often wonder before their first class. If yours isn't here, just call or email us — we love talking to new students.
Modifications are always available
Every pose has variations. Our teachers will offer options throughout class — you're always encouraged to take the version that works for your body that day. There's no "doing it wrong" here.
Optional — Beginner Foundations Series
Every month (except summer) we run a 4-week Beginner Foundations series on Tuesday evenings at 6:45pm — just $45, with a free additional class each week. Look for COURSES in the class schedule.
Arrive on time
Aim for 10 minutes early. If you arrive more than 10 minutes late, we ask that you wait for the next class — late entry disrupts everyone who arrived ready to practice
Honor the teacher's guidance
Modifications are always encouraged — but follow the class structure. If a style isn't your fit, finish the class respectfully and let us help you find a better match.
-
Absolutely not. In fact, lack of flexibility is one of the best reasons to start yoga. Flexibility is a result of yoga — not a prerequisite. Our teachers will always offer modifications so every pose works for your body exactly as it is today.
-
Every single pose in our classes has a modification. You'll never be expected to do something your body isn't ready for. If something doesn't feel right, you can always rest in child's pose. Our teachers check in — don't hesitate to speak up.
-
Yes — and we encourage it. We offer a free 30-minute intro session with Jessie, our owner and lead teacher. She'll learn about your goals, any injuries or limitations, and recommend the best class to start with. Just email us at to schedule.
-
Yes. We offer a Beginner Foundations Series most months (outside of summer) — a 4-week Tuesday evening program at 6:45pm for just $45, with a free additional drop-in class each week. Look for COURSES in our class schedule. It's the ideal structured starting point.
-
Comfortable, flexible clothing you can move freely in. Yoga is practiced barefoot, so no special shoes needed. For hot yoga classes, bring a full-size towel and an extra layer of water. Yoga is done barefoot — leave shoes at the door.
-
Nope. We have mats available to borrow at no charge, and hand towels too. If you fall in love with the practice and want your own mat, we carry them in our retail area and can help you find the right one.
-
Please cancel at least 24 hours before class through our booking system. Cancellations within 24 hours or no-shows use a class credit or may incur a small fee, depending on your membership. We understand life happens — reach out if you have a true emergency and we'll do our best.
-
Often yes — but we want to make sure. Our teachers hold certifications in yoga therapy and trauma-informed practice, and Jessie specializes in working with students managing injuries, joint issues, and chronic conditions. We strongly recommend the free 30-minute intro session so we can understand your situation and guide you safely.
We want you to feel completely at ease from the moment you arrive. Here’s a quick walkthrough of what your first class looks like.
Arrive 10 minutes early
Give yourself time to check in, find a spot for your mat, and get settled. First-timers are always welcomed — let the teacher know it's your first class so they can check in with you.
The class structure
Most classes begin with a centering breath or warm-up, move through a sequence of postures, and close with savasana — a few minutes of full rest. That final rest is an essential part of the practice. Don't skip it.
